First, despite months of bachelor thesis strenuous efforts on the part of the in a Company to bachelor reach agreement with its principal union on new labor contracts consistent with the projections necessary to obtain the Emergence Financing, the parties were unable to do so. Weirton's management came to the conclusion that the leadership of Weirton's principal union preferred some other alternative to person most essay the stand alone Reorganization Plan.

Under those circumstances, management concluded it would not be possible for the Company to finalize the Emergence Facility (or the ESLGB guaranty for that matter) on the terms offered by the lenders in presentation November 2003. Second, other factors led to a deterioration in the Company's business not contemplated when commitments for the Emergence Facility were issued in November 2003. Analytical Count Of Monte Cristo? On December 4, 2003, protective tariffs on steel were removed, raising substantial uncertainties concerning future import levels. Despite the concern over imports, a surging demand for steel in China appears to have dampened imports, and a significant pricing improvement has actually occurred over the past several months. However, only domestic producers who can maximize capability utilization at reduced cost levels will benefit from that development. Unfortunately for the Company, improved costs from new labor contracts have not materialized, and, since December 2003, Weirton has faced a supply shortage of coke, an essential raw material, which has required it to reduce hot metal production for an indeterminate period of time and resort to reductions in manning and staffing levels.

5 Lack of production has translated into the inability to make sales, further eroding Weirton's customer base and adversely affecting liquidity. Based on discussions with its banks, Weirton's management concluded that the Company's business deterioration had undermined its ability to obtain the Emergence Facility. Third, the presentation Reorganization Plan required approval of the requisite classes of voting claimholders for confirmation. Weirton, at the time it postponed the scheduled confirmation hearing in the Bankruptcy Court, had not reached agreement with any of the classes of voting creditors regarding their approval of the Reorganization Plan. Thus, creditor approval remained problematic and confirmation uncertain for reasons other than the Emergence Facility. Based on those developments, in December and January 2004, the Company's Board of Directors directed management to focus on alternative courses of action. Those consisted of disposing of the Company's assets, preferably as a whole to another steelmaker subject to the approval of the Bankruptcy Court, or otherwise in an orderly liquidation of dissertation theories Weirton's business.

Although not preferred, the bachelor presentation possibility of these alternatives had been disclosed in Weirton's public filings. 6. On February 18, 2004, the Company announced that it had reached an agreement to of monte sell substantially all its assets to a subsidiary of thesis International Steel Group, Inc.(ISG) and entered into y dissertation abstracts an Assets Purchase Agreement (the APA) to that effect. The event was reported by the Company publicly and a Form 8-K filed on the same date (February 18, 2004). Thesis? Consistent with its obligations under the APA, the Company subsequently filed materials with the Bankruptcy Court setting in motion the sale process looking to consummate that agreement. Subject to the operation of the bankruptcy process, management believes the sale to in a essay ISG could be consummated sometime in April 2004. Among other things, the terms of the APA provide for thesis presentation, reductions of employee staffing levels at the Company prior to a closing of the transaction, and person most essay the process of reviewing and bachelor thesis presentation implementing those reductions is underway. The Company has been managing its assets as a debtor-in-possession pursuant to dislike essay Sections 1107 and 1108 of the Bankruptcy Code. Beginning in December and January 2004, the thesis Company shifted its efforts from douglass learning to read and write reorganizing to selling its assets or otherwise liquidating its business. The APA represents the outcome of those efforts.

Therefore, the thesis presentation Company's bankruptcy proceeding under Chapter 11 of the Bankruptcy Code has now fundamentally changed in character. It is no longer the essay cristo typical Chapter 11 reorganization that would result in the emergence of the Company as a reorganized, ongoing operating entity. Rather, the Company effectively has become a liquidating debtor. Based on Exchange Act Release 9660 (June 30, 1972) (the 1972 Release) and Staff Legal Bulletin Number 2 (April 16, 1997) (the Bulletin), the Company proposes to discontinue filing with the Commission any further Annual Reports on Form 10-K or Quarterly Reports on Form 10-Q under Section 13(a) or 15(d) of the Exchange Act, but, in bachelor thesis lieu thereof, to continue filing under cover of Form 8-K, copies of its MORs (including any final report) no later than 15 days after they are filed under the Bankruptcy Code and to make filings and disclosures of material events relating to the bankruptcy and otherwise as may be required from time to time on a current basis pursuant to Form 8-K. This modified reporting procedure would replace the periodic reports required under the Exchange Act until the liquidation of Weirton is complete. At the time liquidation is being completed, the Company will (a) file a final Report on frustrating day essay, Form 8-K, (b) take appropriate steps to terminate the bachelor presentation existence of the Company and (c) file a Form 15 to terminate its reporting obligations under the person dislike most Exchange Act. In the bachelor presentation now highly unlikely event Weirton reorganizes pursuant to Chapter 11, it will file a Form 8-K upon dissertations y dissertation, effectiveness of any plan of reorganization with such information (including financial statements if the annual and quarterly reports are not filed as proposed herein) as the Staff deems appropriate. Any reorganized Weirton, to the extent subject to the Exchange Act, would then comply fully with its reporting obligations for all periods commencing after release from proceedings under the Bankruptcy Code. Rationale for Requested Relief.

In the past, the Commission has agreed to the modification or suspension of the Exchange Act reporting requirements of certain issuers subject to proceedings under the Bankruptcy Code. The 1972 Release reflects the Commission's position that it will accept reports that differ in form or content from the quarterly or annual reports required by presentation, the Exchange Act where the dissertation on motivation theories issuer is subject to bankruptcy proceedings or has severely curtailed its operations so long as the modified reporting procedure provides adequate protection for investors and presentation is not inconsistent with the public interest. The Bulletin indicates that issuers may request a no-action letter from the Staff that applies the positions in the 1972 Release to the issuer's facts. The Bulletin requires the issuer to present a clear demonstration of count of monte cristo its inability to continue reporting, its efforts to inform its security holders and bachelor thesis the market, and the absence of a market in its securities by responding to specific guidelines. Frustrating? The following paragraphs provide the required response. A. Information Regarding Disclosure of Financial Condition. 1. Whether the issuer complied with its Exchange Act reporting obligations before its Bankruptcy Code filing. The Bulletin requires that an issuer requesting relief be current in its Exchange Act reports for the 12 months before its bankruptcy filing. Weirton has been current in all its Exchange Act reports, not only for all periods preceding the presentation Bankruptcy Filing, but throughout the bankruptcy process itself (i.e. from May 19, 2003 to analytical on the count date). 2. When the issuer filed its Form 8-K announcing its bankruptcy filing; whether the issuer made any other efforts to bachelor thesis presentation advise the y dissertation abstracts market of its financial condition. The Bulletin requires that an issuer requesting relief timely file a Form 8-K announcing its bankruptcy.

Weirton complied with this obligation by reporting the Bankruptcy Filing in its Report on Form 8-K filed on the same day (May 19, 2003) as the bachelor thesis presentation Bankruptcy Filing. The Bulletin also requires a discussion of any efforts other than the frustrating day essay filing of the bachelor thesis Form 8-K that the issuer made to inform its security holders and the market of its financial condition. Weirton's reports and proxy materials filed under the Exchange Act in 2001-2003 preceding the Bankruptcy Filing and its registration statements and digital dissertations abstracts amendments filed under the Securities Act of bachelor presentation 1933 in 2001 and 2002 in connection with exchange offers covering publicly traded debt are replete with disclosures regarding unprecedented recessionary conditions affecting the domestic steel industry, the Company's deteriorating financial condition stemming from them, the essay count steps the Company was taking or proposing to take to address such matters, and possible consequences and outcomes that could arise from alternative courses of action. These disclosures appeared regularly and multiple times in the Company's filed disclosure documents under topics ranging from Description of Business and Risk Factors to thesis Management's Discussion and dissertations abstracts Analysis. 7 These disclosures demonstrate that the Company has made additional substantial and continuous efforts besides giving notice of the Bankruptcy Filing to bachelor thesis inform its investors and the market of its financial condition and its relationship to making the Bankruptcy Filing. 3. Whether the issuer is able to continue Exchange Act reporting; whether the frustrating day essay information in modified reports is bachelor thesis presentation, adequate to protect investors. The Bulletin requires a discussion of the reasons why an issuer requesting relief cannot continue to comply with Exchange Act reporting, including (a) whether the dislike essay issuer has ceased its operations, (b) why filing periodic reports would present an bachelor thesis presentation undue hardship to the issuer, (c) why the issuer cannot comply with the disclosure requirements and digital dissertations y dissertation (d) why the issuer believes granting the request is consistent with the bachelor thesis presentation protection of investors.

Weirton's steelmaking and finishing operations are conducted at a single site in count West Virginia. Substantially all the Company's facilities operating at the date of the Bankruptcy Filing remain operational at present, with, however, curtailed hot metal production and reduced manning and staffing as noted. In order to pursue the alternative of bachelor thesis presentation a going concern asset sale, it was important to maintain as many of Weirton's ordinary business operations as possible and as its financial condition permitted. Under the living dormitory APA, Weirton is now required to continue to bachelor thesis presentation operate its commercial business in the normal course until the assets are sold to ISG. The fact that Weirton's operations remain intact for those purposes, however, does not supply a reason why the Company should be required to count of monte continue with its previous level of Exchange Act reporting. The importance is not in the temporary normality of the operations, but in the fast approaching end to which they relate. Under the bankruptcy process, Weirton will cease to operate in the short-term, possibly within weeks after its next ordinary Exchange Act periodic report is due. Bachelor Thesis Presentation? Moreover, while the APA focuses on operational continuity, it will also result in additional permanent staff reductions, including among the about frederick to read Company's staff normally involved with reporting and compliance.

B. Information Regarding the Market for bachelor, the Issuer's Securities. The Bulletin requires the issuer requesting relief to discuss in detail the market for its securities. The more active the market, the less likely that relief will be granted. If the issuer's securities are traded on a national securities exchange or the NASDAQ Stock Market, the Bulletin indicates that the frustrating day essay Commission is unlikely to grant the requested relief. The information must demonstrate that there is minimal trading in the issuer's securities. The Bulletin also requires the issuer to provide the number of market makers for bachelor presentation, its securities and the number of most essay trades per month for bachelor, each of the three months before the issuer's Bankruptcy Code filing and each month after the filing. The Company's Common Stock is not listed on a national securities exchange or the NASDAQ Stock Market.

Trading in dislike essay the Company's Common Stock has been available on the OTC Electronic Bulletin Board since September 2001. The Company believes there have been five market makers listed for its Common Stock, but has had no recent contact with them. Trading in the Common Stock while on the OTC Bulletin Board had been generally at volumes less than on the NYSE. For all of 2002, according to the Company, average daily trading volume in the Common Stock was approximately 84,500 shares. For 2003, according to information maintained by bachelor presentation, the Company, average daily trading volumes and average trading prices of the Common Stock in the first four months preceding the Bankruptcy Filing were: (i) January -16,862 shares @ $0.29; (ii) February- 38,711 shares @ $0.26; (iii) March- 40,548 shares @ $0.24; and. (iv) April- 36,355 shares @ $0.17. Following the living dormitory essay month of the Bankruptcy Filing (May), average daily volume and price for the succeeding months was as follows: (i) June- 97,010 shares @ $0.06; (ii) July- 52,741 shares @ $0.05; (iii) August- 120,343 shares @ $0.05; (iv) September- 93,857 shares @ $0.11; (v) October- 84,187 shares @ $0.08; (vi) November- 211,663 shares @ $0.07; and.

(vii) December- 386,845 shares @ $0.05. Bachelor Thesis? 11. While the above volumes for 2003 were not insignificant measured in numbers of shares traded, the of monte cristo penny stock levels of their prices mean that the dollar value of trading has been in fact de minimis. For example, the bachelor average daily dollar value of essay about frederick douglass learning and write trading during the balance of 2003 (June-December) was only $13,665. Thesis? Excluding the artificially high peak months of November and December 2003, the daily dollar value was a mere $9,802. At such levels, the costs of dissertation compliance with full periodic reporting, even if the Company could pay for them, seem grossly disproportionate to any benefit. The Company maintains no records regarding trading of its Series C Preferred Stock which was issued as partial consideration in a 2002 exchange offer for senior notes. Trading in that security is believed to be minimal and sporadic. The Company believes that continued full periodic reporting will provide no protective benefit to equity investors and, as discussed below, no incremental benefit to debtholders. As previously disclosed by presentation, the Company, the impaired classes of claimants against the estate consisting of all holders of equity (Class 8- Preferred Stock Interests and Class 9- Common Stock Interests) would have received no distribution under the frustrating Reorganization Plan and bachelor were deemed to have rejected it.

The Company has concluded that such holders will fare no better under the sale and in a dormitory liquidation alternative. As a result, two of the principal classes of investors whom the disclosure structure under the Exchange Act was designed to protect not only account for minimal value of trading of the bachelor most speculative nature, but are certain to frustrating day essay receive nothing as a result of the bankruptcy proceeding. Under those circumstances, the Company believes it makes no sense to thesis expend more of its scarce resources providing the same full disclosure protections (as it has for the nine ensuing months of its bankruptcy) where it furnishes no meaningful protection to in a dormitory essay investors. As noted, additionally, three issues of debt are also listed for trading on the OTC Bulletin Board. The Company maintains no records concerning their trading levels or volumes and receives only sporadic contacts from firms which are trading, or purport to be trading, such instruments.

C. The Timing of the Issuer's Request for thesis, Modification of person essay Reporting. The Bulletin indicates that an issuer should submit its request promptly after it has entered bankruptcy. Weirton has submitted its request promptly after the thesis change in direction of its bankruptcy case indicated to the Company that the relief it is y dissertation, now seeking is both necessary and merited. Bachelor Thesis Presentation? Prior to this point, the Company's bankruptcy proceedings were directed primarily at essay frederick learning restructuring and, accepting the view that disclosure could serve some useful purpose for investors and the Company's available financial resources could support its efforts, it provided full and complete Exchange Act reporting since the thesis presentation Bankruptcy Filing. Essay On The Count Of Monte? With the need to resort to an asset sale under the APA and the current intention to liquidate, those circumstances no longer exist. In view of (a) the fact that the Company is no longer pursuing restructuring and has agreed to sell its assets, becoming a liquidating Chapter 11 debtor, (b) the bachelor enormity of the on motivation task facing the Company's limited staff in preparing MORs and other filings and pleadings with the Bankruptcy Court directed at obtaining approval of the thesis presentation sale and continuing to deal with the prospective acquirer and creditor representatives, (c) the essay about frederick learning and write limited and tenuous financial resources available to the Company, (d) the de mininmis trading values reflected in the market for the Company's Common Stock and thesis presentation the certitude that equity holders will not receive value from the disposition of the Company's assets from one bankruptcy alternative or another, (e) the learning and write procedural and substantive protections through the Bankruptcy Court and Bankruptcy Code available to holders of the Company's publicly held debt who may receive value from the bankruptcy, and (e) the abundance of public information concerning the Company that otherwise will be available to interested parties through Bankruptcy Court filings and thesis presentation the modified, reduced reporting procedures proposed herein, the Company believes that the modified procedures are appropriate to its condition. Granting the relief requested herein would be consistent with the 1972 Release, the Bulletin and the Staff's prior no-action correspondence, where, as here, full compliance with the reporting requirements of the Exchange Act would pose an undue hardship, such compliance was not needed to protect and inform investors and the public, and the modified reporting procedures proposed were not inconsistent with the essay public interest.

For the foregoing reasons, I respectfully request that the dissertation on motivation Staff confirm that it will not recommend enforcement action to the Commission if the Company proceeds to modify its reporting under the Exchange Act as specified under the caption Requested Relief. The Company has advised me that it undertakes to report and perform such actions in thesis presentation the manner so specified. If you have any questions regarding this matter or if you need additional information, please do not hesitate to contact me at the numbers/addresses indicated above or William R. Kiefer, Esq., Secretary and dissertation on motivation theories General Counsel of bachelor thesis presentation Weirton, 400 Three Springs Drive, Weirton, WV 26062 who may be reached at (304) 797-2111 william.kiefer@weirton.com. If the Staff believes that it will be unable to respond affirmatively to about frederick and write this request, we would like the bachelor presentation opportunity to about frederick and write discuss with you, in advance of any formal written response, possible alternative courses of action that the Company might pursue. Very truly yours, cc: William R. Kiefer, Esq. 1 The Company also has the following debt and thesis presentation equity securities registered under Section 12(g) of the analytical essay on the count cristo Exchange Act: (i) 11 3/8% Senior Notes due 2004; (ii) 10 ? % Senior Notes due 2005; (iii) 10% Senior Secured Notes due 2008); and (iv) Convertible, Redeemable Preferred Stock, Series C (par value $.10 per share). All are available for trading on the OTC Bulletin Board.

2 Among other things, the Reorganization Plan provided for thesis presentation, cancellation of the Common Stock and all other existing equity interests in Weirton without any payment or other consideration therefor. The Disclosure Statement, which was distributed to all claimants of record in dissertation theories the bankruptcy, contained a detailed and comprehensive discussion and bachelor review of factors relating to the bankruptcy and the Reorganization Plan. 3 The timing of the filing of the Reorganization Plan, the circulation of in a essay its related Disclosure Statement and accompanying ballots, as well as the bachelor presentation Bankruptcy Court hearing and the emergence financing had been structured to accommodate the anticipated expiration of the authority of the essay ESLGB to issue guarantees on December 31, 2003 and, accordingly, to satisfy all necessary conditions to an emergence by that date. 4 The relevant bill became law as of January 23, 2004. 5 As the thesis Company has disclosed in its filings and reports, it is an integrated producer in that it makes steel from raw materials (principally iron ore/pellets, coke, limestone and other minerals), but it does not own or control raw material production sources, as do several of its larger competitors. In December 2003, a coal mine fire affecting Weirton's primary coke supplier (which is also its primary competitor in dissertations tin mill products) led that supplier to declare force majeure conditions and to thesis presentation put the Company on allocation of on motivation coke at levels significantly below promised contract volumes. Given the worldwide shortage of thesis presentation coke, the cancellation of frustrating a secondary supply contract and its weak finances, the Company has been unable to replace the lost volumes. 6 According to the Disclosure Statement: The Debtor is also simultaneously pursuing other options with respect to its reorganization, which may include, but are not limited to, the sale of some or all of thesis Weirton's operating assets. Weirton's ability to sell some or all its assets could impact [sic] Weirton's decision to pursue its reorganization in accordance with the [Reorganization] Plan. The Company's Form 10-Q filed on November 14, 2003 also indicated this alternative possibility.

7 In the interest of conciseness, these disclosures have been characterized without a detailed listing. Dissertation On Motivation Theories? If the bachelor thesis presentation Staff requires such a listing quoting actual language, it can be furnished supplementally. 8 Continued normal periodic reporting would require retention of third party professionals for the 2003 Annual Report on dissertation on motivation theories, Form 10-K, the next periodic report, due on March 30, 2004, at an estimated $60,000-$100,000 (presuming the Company has the presentation internal workforce to manage such a third party process considering the headcount reductions described above and in footnote 10) beyond the ordinary costs for in a dormitory essay, producing, filing and disseminating such report. 9 The revolver under the DIP Facility utilizes all collections to pay down indebtedness on a daily basis and permits the Company, if an adequate borrowing base of inventory and receivables exists at presentation the time and there is essay about to read and write, no default, to reborrow sums for working capital purposes. Defaults under the DIP Facility can arise from, among other things, failure to maintain specified financial ratios and other measurements. Expenses for continued reporting, particularly where they involve costs for outside professionals, adversely affect such measurements and bachelor presentation can contribute to a DIP Facility default.

10 Since the Bankruptcy Filing and to date, the number of salaried exempt employees has been reduced approximately 24% through departures and terminations. These have included employees involved in the preparation of most essay periodic reporting documents as well as supporting their preparation. Only two management employees regularly involved with periodic reporting documentation preparation remain at present and they are heavily occupied in the sale. Presentation? The Company estimates that preparation of its Form 10-K in prior years has involved, on the average, several hundred hours of internal time. 11 The significant rise in trading activity in digital dissertations y dissertation the last two months of 2003 coincided with the filing of the Reorganization Plan, the circulation of the bachelor Disclosure Statement and ballots for approval of the plan and the securing of commitments related to the Emergence Facility, during all of dissertations which time the Company was providing full Exchange Act reporting. 12 The secured pollution control bond claims arise from bachelor thesis debt instruments issued in a 2002 exchange offer by the City of Weirton, WV for an earlier series of unsecured pollution control bonds. The 2002 issue was secured by Company facilities on a shared lien basis with the Company's 10% Senior Secured Notes due 2008 issued in a simultaneous 2002 exchange offer made by Weirton. Person Dislike? The latter issue is a security of the thesis Company registered under Section 12(g) of the Exchange Act and frustrating day essay referred to under Background.

13 The general unsecured claims include the two remaining unsecured issues of the Company's Senior Notes due 2004 and 2005 registered under Section 12(g) of the Exchange Act and bachelor thesis presentation referred to under Background.

cons to homework Maybe you're a kid wondering how a move from the United States to a foreign country might change your life. Maybe you're a parent pondering the bachelor thesis, pros and cons of taking another foreign assignment. Will multiple moves irrepairably damage a youngster's psyche? Here are some of my thoughts, based on my personal experience. When I use the term global nomad(s) I do so loosely to describe my own thoughts as one member of that group. This is not an academic treatise on the subject -- only dissertation a sketch of some elements of the experience I have found particularly noteworthy. Who is a global nomad? A global nomad is an individual who, spending a significant part of their developmental years in another culture, develops some sense of belonging to both the host culture and bachelor thesis presentation, the home culture, while not having a sense of total ownership in either.

Elements from both (or multiple) cultures are blended, resulting in the third culture. Global nomads don't all have the same experiences in the same countries. What they have in common is the experience of moving multiple times to various countries that become part of their cultural identity. They don't necessarily share a similar background, they don't necessarily speak the same languages, they didn't necessarily go to the same international schools. But they share the experience of analytical count growing up in culture(s) not their own.

I personally prefer the term global nomad coined by Norma McCaig to another frequently used phrase, third culture kid or TCK. Beginning in bachelor thesis presentation 1970, at the age of 18 months, I spent sizeable portions of my childhood, adolescence and teen years moving every one, two or three years. I didn't stop to question my nomadic life until I was 26, working in Japan for a Japanese company and feeling completely uprooted. The comments that follow relate mostly to my experiences of dissertation being a US passport holder, but a mix of Japanese and American cultures with a dash of European for spice. It took misery to prompt me into wondering what it would be like not to bachelor thesis, move every couple of years.

It seemed to me that for many people, having a stable community and person dislike most essay, home during childhood was a source of stability and bachelor, strength. I began questioning how my life would have been different had I not moved so continuously. I realized that my journey had provided me with many positive tools, and some very difficult experiences. I needed to of monte, sort them out, so I made a list and pondered it. The following is a result of my thoughts. I like to start with the bright side. After comparing notes with other global nomads and thinking over my life, these are some of the upside elements of bachelor living all over the world. Cross Cultural Skills. It took me a long time to living in a dormitory, articulate and value the concept of cross cultural skills.

This shouldn't happen anymore . . . Thesis Presentation? parents, teachers and business communities must become more aware of these skills so they can acknowledge and encourage them in frustrating their children, employees and peers. Flexibility, tolerance and bachelor presentation, strong observation skills are cross cultural skills par excellence. On Motivation? And as the world becomes ever more fast-paced global nomads come already equipped with the necessary skills to change adjustment stress into bachelor presentation success. In A? As cultures and communities come increasingly into bachelor contact, global nomads know how to respect, observe and learn from cultural differences. About? We don't assume that our way is the best or only thesis way. We are life-long learners, and the world is our classroom. These are critical skills in a world looking for economic prosperity and day essay, peace, when in the past there has been a tendency to bachelor presentation, destroy what we don't understand and annihilate those who are different. We can also be wonderful teachers for living dormitory essay, others who aren't used to dealing with rapid change. Global nomads tend to think quickly on bachelor presentation our feet and can take the frustrating day essay, initiative to bachelor thesis, troubleshoot -- but we often do so in a context of understanding the currents and observing the situation first. Since being back in the US for several years now, I've noticed that flexibility and tolerance don't always translate as strong points in American life.

It seems to me that holding a strong personal viewpoint and demonstrating leadership is highly valued. A person's forceful thinking and handling of a situation garners kudos. Observation in particular seems to be underrated. Most? I know from experience that Americans will often underestimate or ignore someone who is not loud, flashy, and quick. Many cultures point out that we have two eyes, two ears and only one mouth. . Bachelor Presentation? . for good reason. The Japanese have a saying, Silence is golden.

Global nomads try to figure out which way the river is flowing before we jump in. There are many times when I have thought how much Americans have to learn from dissertation theories these perspectives. Another great aspect of bachelor thesis presentation being a global nomad is our multi-dimensional world view. From a very young age the world as we know it is not limited to county lines, a section of the mid-West or even a single country. The rest of the world is not merely a 20 minute segment on on the of monte Fifty Minutes, a National Geographic article or an English speaking pen-pal. I have celebrated Oktoberfest on the Rhine with German friends, eating raw pork with onion on a thick slice of thesis presentation rye bread. I have walked around the magnifient ice carvings during the Japanese Sapporo snow festival with friends from Japan, Indonesia and day essay, Palestine.

I know as much about British history and geography as I do about the United States, and I remember when commemorative coins were issued in Solihull, England to celebrate the bachelor thesis, marriage of about frederick learning and write Diana, Princess of thesis Wales, to the heir to the British throne, Prince Charles. When a global nomad reads the news, they can often picture and feel what's happening thousands of miles away. This does not generally apply to kids who grow up in one culture. Essay Frederick Douglass To Read And Write? My sister Suzanne returned to the United States at the age of bachelor thesis presentation 14, having lived abroad since she was three years old. It was her most difficult move, and abstracts, part of that was because she no longer had a global nomad peer group. She was attending school at an upscale, East Coast boarding school as a day student.

The day the Berlin wall fell in 1990 she ran to the commons room to watch the news. She and I had once stood, gazing at the concrete and barbed wire no-man's land dividing Germany, with a German friend who had family somewhere past the armed guards. Excitedly thinking about thesis presentation, how the Froelich family must feel, Suzanne asked her fellow students to turn to the news. It was 12 o'clock. Several other young teens deemed a popular soap opera more important. This is an important point, because unlike kids who grow up in one place, a global nomad feels connected to events taking place all over the world. When an earthquake toppled highways in Kobe in January of essay on the cristo 1995 and presentation, killed over 5,000 people, I wept with the rest of person dislike Japan. When floods destroy parts of Bangladesh and typhoons sweep away hundreds of people in India, I think of my friends, and their families, and I pray for their safety, just as I do for bachelor presentation, people killed in mudslides in Seattle. Y Dissertation? We recognize that people everywhere share the joys and pains of life. We've lived, felt, smelt, heard and bachelor thesis presentation, witnessed wide swaths of analytical essay count human experience. One of my personal challenges has been to accept people who haven't traveled and aren't interested in traveling as fine people.

For a long time I felt that most people from my home culture -- Americans -- were relatively shallow and narrow-minded. During conversations with most Americans I found them woefully ignorant of international events, personalities or issues. In general they seemed uninterested in the world, complacent and arrogant. Feelings like these can really put a damper on friendships -- but more about that in the section on intimacy. Along with a wider world view comes a greater spiritual perspective as well. This is partly the result of global nomad skills with flexibility and tolerance.

It is also because we observe that different people's experience has created different truths in their lives -- from how to relate to bachelor, self and others to dislike essay, how to relate to spirituality. When you spend your childhood observing and experiencing so many wonderful variations on how and what to eat (most Americans won't touch raw fish and visibly cringe at bachelor thesis presentation, the idea of analytical on the of monte cristo raw pork), how to speak and dance and organize in groups -- it's easy for the global nomad to question those who promote a belief that there is only ONE way to nourish a spiritual life. Rather than be threatened by different belief systems, global nomads often relish the beauty in the diversity of bachelor thesis religious systems, taking something from everything. And then there is maturity level. Most global nomads tend to be a couple years ahead of their home country counterparts in terms of maturity.

We have wonderful skills for handling formal situations, and when we answer phones we are polite, we remember to take messages and we are often mistaken for our parents. It comes from often being repeatedly tossed into situations where entertaining -- either business or diplomatic -- is a regular event. There is also a sense of maturity that springs from success when you make friends, adjust to a new school, and learn your way around public transportation systems. By the time I was a senior at count of monte, the American School in Japan getting around Shinjuku station was a breeze, a daily 2 and a half hour commute to and from school was nothing, and my day away from bachelor home generally stretched from living dormitory essay 7 am to thesis presentation, 6 pm -- with homework until late at night. I worked harder in highschool for longer hours than I did for the first year and a half at Pomona College. Theories? In fact, when I arrived at bachelor thesis, college I had few common interests with my first year classmates, and found myself making more friends among the Juniors and Seniors. On the other hand, there are areas of development where the global nomad may be totally out of digital dissertations phase. Bachelor? My parents actually had to bully me into dislike a driver's education class when I was 17. We were in Maine on homeleave for two months, and thesis, I didn't want to do it. Essay Douglass Learning To Read? What was the presentation, point?

In Tokyo there was a great train and subway system that got me where I wanted to go far faster than any car could have. I had no interest in learning how to on the count of monte, drive a car -- I figured when I returned for bachelor thesis, college that I would rely on the train and bus system wherever I wound up. There were kids in living in a dormitory my driver's ed class who were 14 and a half and couldn't wait to be able to drive -- and couldn't believe I had no interest in learning how to drive. I still have trouble remembering my social security number, and I only established a credit card history two years ago at the age of 27. Being bilingual or multi-lingual is valuable.

When you're at a school where people speak five, six or seven languages it doesn't seem like knowing another language is that big a deal -- but it is. Bachelor Thesis Presentation? I deliberately put this in the pro category because people (and Americans in particular) can be strange about essay learning, language ability. There is a lot of lip service paid to the advantages of knowing another language, but there are still alot of people who think of it as a novel conversation piece and leave it at that. Beyond working for presentation, the UN or doing translation work people rarely see language capability as important, and are quick to stick to their own familiar words. When I lived in England, despite being obviously American, my English papers had marks taken off for every u I forgot to add to words like colour and favour. Digital Abstracts? Most Caucasian Americans I know dismiss language ability as unimportant in a world where English is the language coin of the realm.

Language is a touchy, natinalistic issue (witness the French rejection of English infiltration). I maintain that the Canadians and the continental Europeans (many of whom know at least two or three languages) are on the right track. Languages offer different people a variety of way of bachelor thesis expressing themselves creatively. Frustrating? Who wants only one kind of bachelor thesis presentation art? Why would we want only one kind of language? So that's a quick summary of some of the pros that come to mind about being a global nomad.

Obviously all the above skills vary depending on the person, how many times they moved, and the attitudes of living dormitory essay their parents. So what's on the darker side of the global nomad experience? I have found that to get to the place of celebrating the thesis, pros of being a global nomad, I had to deal with some painful emotional issues -- and I still do. I suspect that the global nomad who does not at day essay, some time recognize and work with the following issues finds sooner or later that their relationships, their work, and bachelor thesis presentation, their larger world view are in chaos. One of the drawbacks is a sense of rootlessness. The belief that you belong simultaneously everywhere and about frederick douglass learning to read and write, nowhere. When I meet people and they ask me casually, So, where are you from?

I always determine what level answer I want to share. There's the short story -- Seattle. There's the potential story -- Seattle, but I spent over twelve years of my life living abroad. And finally there's the all out presentation response -- I call Seattle home now, but I lived in frustrating day essay Japan for ten years, Germany two years and spent a year and a half in the United Kingdom. I consider myself to be different parts of all these places and people. The struggle in bachelor thesis presentation answering the question Where are you from? is a common experience, and you don't want to waste time and breath on living in a essay someone who doesn't really care. To transcend rootlessness is to feel at bachelor thesis presentation, home wherever you are, regardless of environment. Home is reframed to include the world.

For me, this journey started when I made the decision to start with my self. I believe that as long as you feel at home in your own skin, you'll always find a way to create home around you. Restlessness is a kindred spirit to rootlessness. I once read that 75 percent of global nomads change colleges at living in a, least three times. Neither I nor my sister changed colleges once. . . so someone out bachelor thesis presentation there is doing a lot of moving around! On the other hand, once I graduated from college I moved four times in as many years. My sister Suzanne just graduated from y dissertation college and has moved three times in bachelor thesis presentation nine months. For most global nomads, it's simply a question of when, not if, they're going to keep on roaming. Yet sooner or later most global nomads face a crisis (or repeated crises) that bring them face to face with the question of on the count of monte how often and where do they really want to move. How restless are they?

Why do they feel that way? Is it serving them or is it an archaic bit of life left over from their childhood experiences? It took me until my late twenties to acknowledge the deep sense of rootlessness and insecurity that my exotic overseas life masked. I'm still in thesis the process of trying to figure it all out. Right now what seems to work is on motivation, living in a place I call home while knowing that I could travel if I wanted to. Pretty soon I will have been in Seattle for three years. . Presentation? . the longest I've lived anywhere since I was nine. . . and I'm curious to person dislike most, see how that will feel. Trouble with intimacy. Global nomads know how to be mobile. Traveling for business or fun poses little problem. But that same footloose attitude doesn't always bode well for relationships. The idea of commitment, daunting enough for most people, can stir tremendous insecurity and fear in for those raised around the world.

It's ironic. On one hand global nomads step into situations with other global nomads and rapidly form strong relationships with them -- usually because they are talking about their experiences, their shared culture. But on the other hand global nomads know how to keep emotional distance. Until recently I always kept a margin of emotional detachment in bachelor all my relationships. My emotional antennae, finely tuned for any vibration of the word goodbye, worked overtime. I felt like I had to be vigilant and living essay, prepared at any moment to draw into presentation the protective sheath of my goodbye armor. Global nomads say goodbye multitudes of times -- not only to people, but to schools, to living in a essay, homes, to cultural identities, to aspects of a country they have come to love. Trusting a relationship to stay the course through the joy and the pain of life flies in the face of thesis accumulated global nomad experience. We all handle the separation from friends and places differently.

Some global nomads attempt to maintain friendships long distance. With each move, as the list of correspondants grows and the pain increases, this can be a formidable task. The Internet, with it's gift of on motivation theories e-mail, is a godsend for global nomads. Instead of expensive phone calls and/or time-consuming and outdated letter correspondence, you can type off an update and send it to dozens of people all over the world and they'll be reading it sometime within the next 24 hours. Although some global nomads work at relationship despite time and distance, some do not. Bachelor? Some can end relationships on the turn of learning to read and write a dime. When they learn a friend is bachelor thesis presentation, leaving in a couple months, they turn and walk away, thinking that if they start letting go now that when the moment of day essay true goodbye arrives it will not sting and ache quite as much. This is not just some neurotic problem -- it is a response that builds up over bachelor presentation, several experiences of being told by a parent that We're leaving Singapore for France when the school year ends. Analytical Essay Of Monte Cristo? Isn't that a surprise? It builds when global nomads discover that friends are leaving a year earlier than expected, and will be gone within the month.

For a long time my thinking ran something like this: the best line of defense against bachelor thesis, pain is frustrating day essay, a good offense, therefore guard against vulnerability and be prepared to drop a relationship at a moment's notice. Some of my deepest on-going struggles are the bachelor, ones I have with trusting and creating geniune relationships. Because I am asked again and essay frederick, again to be vulnerable. To reveal my true feelings. To allow myself to thesis presentation, care deeply about the presence and love of frustrating day essay other human beings.

To be willing to share pain and bachelor presentation, tears and witness them in another without running away. Frustrating Day Essay? In this journey there is no room for unilateral decision-making, or unilateral leave-taking. This will be part of bachelor my life-time work. Loneliness and isolation can become unwelcome bosom buddies as a single move turns into two, into three, into y dissertation four. Bachelor Presentation? It is a lifelong challenge for dislike most essay, anyone to handle the balance of past and present in bachelor a way that leads to essay, a fully lived present. Global nomads tend to either be more susceptible to living more in the past (especially if they're unhappy with a new school, location or living circumstance) or denying they ever had a past at all. Opening to past sadness or other people requires a level of vulnerability that can at first feel devastating. It is tempting to insist that I can take care of myself, I don't need anyone else. Self-reliance and independence are valuable resources, but not at the expense of pushing away help when you need it. Presentation? When I was about 13 years old I adopted the Simon and frustrating, Garfunkel I am a rock philosophy of life -- and I spent years feeling isolated and lonely . On top of that, I learned to expect airport delays, long waits for the packers to thesis, finish packing or unpacking our home and an even longer time spent finding friends. I filled those hours/days/months with books and thoughts.

If I am being aware, I can slip into times when being sociable is too much of a burden. . Dissertations Abstracts? . it's easier, more pleasant, and more fun to be by myself. When you haven't had a sense of having a large social support group, it can be difficult to develop and maintain a social support group later. Most people take this for bachelor thesis, granted -- they have friends, family, church folks and a sense of community to lean on. They know that they are isolated only if they choose to be. Dislike Most Essay? But for those of thesis us who have moved around a lot, stable community is a new concept, and it takes time to really understand or trust it. The rootlessness and dissertation, struggle with intimacy will create all kinds of learning opportunities in any close relationship a global nomad has. Thesis Presentation? Those who have grown up in one place will probably have a tough time understanding their friend or partner's restlessness, the desire to move, the need for change. In A Dormitory Essay? And if you're with another global nomad. . . who gets to choose where to live next?!

Of course there are those who, having moved all over the world as a child have no intention of moving again, ever! They can become very permanently settled, but this is less common, particularly during the college transition. Unresolved grief is probably the heaviest burden in the backpack of the global nomad. When you say goodbye as many times as a global nomad does you can start building up some pretty intense grief. I've been told the average number of goodbyes for global nomads is eight times by the time they're 18 years old, although for bachelor, me it was five times. But that's just the times when I was the one leaving, it doesn't include the goodbyes I said to others who were going while I stayed behind. How you handle partings becomes a critical component of the rest of your life. It's taken me years to figure out how to respond when even small goodbyes trigger mudslides of denial and emotion. For example, 24 hours before my fiancee leaves for a three day business trip I start withdrawing. A sense of loneliness way out of proportion with the time he will be gone wells up in me. And as I'm driving away from dropping him at the airport, I always cry.

Over the dissertation on motivation theories, last year I've gone from tears streaming down my face to a tear drop or two, and now I don't have a crushing sense that I'll NEVER see him again. Because now I know it's less about bachelor thesis, him leaving than it is about my emotional goodbye button getting a firm push. Living In A? The goodbye at the airport scenario takes on bachelor gothic, mythic overtones for the global nomad. Grief happens and it can't be reasoned with. Essay About Frederick Learning And Write? The truth is there's only way out of it -- and that is by going through it. If nobody gives you time to say what you're feeling out loud, to listen to you in your sadness, or to acknowledge that it hurts to be away from people and places you love, you tend to stuff it all inside. And when this happens over several moves, you've got some pretty potent grief gnawing at bachelor presentation, your heart. Everyone experiences grief -- it's not that global nomads have a corner on the grief market. But we experience loss on a more regular and intense basis, and often with a greater sense of analytical count being alone than those who experience loss while living continuously in bachelor presentation their home town. Parents and educators need to realize that it is critical for analytical count of monte cristo, the global nomad (and themselves) to have time to grieve.

Parents need to witness to presentation, that grief. Without guilt, without defensiveness -- but to really hear the sadness. Otherwise, that grief and digital dissertations, loneliness will help create relationship chaos for that global nomad throughout his or her life. Technology -- and a culture that values stoicism -- doesn't allow much time for dealing for grief anymore. Planes take off from the bachelor thesis presentation, US and land half a world away in a matter of 13 hours.

Air journies don't lend themselves to grieving. You're dehydrated (no way to dislike essay, cry), cramped (no room to draw a breath) and in a public area (the person next door is not going to bachelor thesis, be thrilled about witnessing your emotional squall). There used to be time to process grief associated with travel. My ancestors who left Scandinavia in 1891 and digital y dissertation, 1902 took steamship rides that lasted five or six weeks -- they had ample time to process their leave-taking. There is another closely related con here too, which is unresolved anger. I'm not going to bachelor thesis, write about dissertation on motivation, it yet though, because I haven't figured this one out. I can say that it's there, but I can't offer any perspective or suggestions for presentation, how to recognize or cope with it yet. . . Theories? but give me time.

What I realized writing this is that every pro carries seeds of cons and every con carries seeds of pros. Because global nomads have ached at the loss of locations and friends we love, we tend to bachelor thesis, be highly compassionate and empathic folks. We understand isolation, we understand discomfort around being new, we understand the feeling of y dissertation abstracts not belonging. It is bachelor, a rare global nomad who will not reach out to the person who is new, or try to comfort someone suffering from a deep loss. To this day certain memories are a source of joy and essay about frederick douglass to read and write, wonder to me. I am continually reminded of how blessed I have been to have two parents who were brave and strong enough to bachelor, venture into unknown lands. They wanted to get to know people in various countries on a deep personal level, rather than isolating themselves comfortably in ex-pat communities. When I get married this coming August there will be people present who will have traveled from all over the US, Germany, Japan, Australia and Singapore to join the celebration.

These are people who have been part of my family's international community of friends for decades. It is an essay about frederick douglass honor to bachelor thesis, know that I am woven into the weave of dissertation on motivation so many different worlds. I can truthfully say that looking back from bachelor thesis presentation where I am today, I wouldn't have choosen a different childhood. 1997, Debra Carlson, WorldWeave Publications.

Comparative Analysis of ‘Blackrock” – Nick Enright and “Blurred” Stephen Davis Essay Sample. The first of two plays that has been considered for bachelor thesis selection in upcoming International Theatre for Young People’s Festival soon to be held in Vancouver, Canada is “Blackrock” by the late Nick Enright. The plays must represent the values, attitudes and beliefs of day essay today’s Australian Youth Culture. “Blackrock” explores the strength of mateship, the importance of image and the dangers of thesis peer pressure, parties and underage drinking. The second play is the popular “Blurred” by the playwright Stephen Davis; which offers a comedic and clever representation of person dislike most perhaps the most famous Australian youth orientated rite of passage, “Schoolies”. Both of these plays portray representations of the highest calibre of Australian youth culture. Both initially play to Australian stereotypes and colloquialism but as interrelationships develop audiences are invited to thesis, gain insight into the youth culture and the society which they represent. The thematic relevance, human context, dramatic form and language of the plays contents relates directly to the Festivals rationale and are unique to Australia. The rationale of the Festival is in place to allow young people to explore their own ideas and experiences within the world that they live and give the opportunity to day essay, explore and thesis presentation, dramatize larger issues of justice and injustice which they as youth may often feel powerless to influence, and to allow youth to expand their horizons – to move beyond their won experience of the world and to dissertations y dissertation abstracts, inhabit different personae and bachelor thesis, different societies. “Blackrock” is analytical on the, a play based in a coastal town and presentation, is based on events prior to and immediately following the violent murder of the character, Tracy Warner. Dislike Most Essay! This occurrence pushes relationships to their limits and raises issues of injustice. The theme of “Blackrock” offers insight into the Australian ‘Surfie’ culture whereby all characters are in someway affiliated with surfing or the beach.

Teenage rebellion against societal norms and thesis presentation, conformity is also apparent. It can be seen in the play that as a result of these rebellious actions, the day essay, careless acts undertaken whilst under the influence of alcohol can have devastating consequences. Blackrock also raises the issue of to what extent do you back up your mate? How strong is the concept of mateship? Also the importance of image, image is something individual youth pride themselves on, to have an bachelor thesis presentation, image that entails popularity and to be relatively well liked is a high priority for many teenagers around the globe. The types of characters involved in “Blackrock” unfortunately don’t give a true representation of all Australian youth; as they lack ambition and goals and show little to no respect to their elders, parents or the authorities. Douglass To Read! The male youths also seem somewhat apathetic in relation to life and bachelor presentation, living in relation to the murder of Tracey Warner. On Motivation Theories! However Blackrock does offer a true representation of mateship and how one would act under immense pressure. The world believes, due to the fact that the media have depicted, that Australia’s regardless of age share the trait of grace under pressure, Enright sheds new light on this stereotypically Australian trait through dramatic form, language and human context keeping in the theme of realism. The relationship between Jared and Ricko explores in great depth the theme of mateship.

In doing so the interrelationship formed invites international audiences to view what this aspect of Australian Youth Culture is inherit of. As the play develops, audiences become aware of the fact that it was indeed Ricko that in thesis, a fit of rage murdered Tracey Warner, then turns to his best mate for about frederick douglass learning and write help. Ricko asks what many may view as unfair, for Jared to lie to the authorities. Unbeknownst to Ricko, Jared witnessed the murder in all its bloody veracity. Jared is then faced with the moral dilemma of sticking by bachelor thesis, his mate, and conceding to audiences that mateship is a powerful force apparent in Australian Youth Culture, or turn to the authorities and do not only himself justice but also the murdered Tracy Warner. “…You get over there now. You tell them what we said…You were with your mate…Day I met you, down the half-pipe, blood running out of essay about learning to read here [forehead]; I piled you into spiders van…Get in the van I said. Now you get in the van.

Your turn to look after me.” (P56 – 7) This illustrates not only what type of thesis character Ricko is but also the way in which he interacts with other characters in Blackrock. He uses foul language such as: “You are, man, you fucken are” (p57) The language used in Blackrock depicts the essay, Surfie sub-culture that resides within Australian Youth Culture. Bachelor Thesis! A prime example of how Enright has utilized language to appeal to the targeted group, teens, was one of day essay Toby’s initial lines. Presentation! Toby is a close friend of Jared and also sister of Jared’s girlfriend Rachel: “I’ll put on a keg-show down the surf club” (P3) Enright also exploits Australian colloquialisms to reiterate the theme of teenage rebellion, something generic of the western world.

Unfortunately inherit of teenage rebellion is anti-social behaviour so eloquently put by Dave: “Bet ya ten bucks you can’t take out person dislike essay, that street light” (P27) Also it is apparent that the presentation, teenage characters in this play, are excessively disrespectful of their parents: Diane (mother) – “Where are you going?” Enright also to connect with audiences uses colloquialism and refers to things that aren’t widely apparent internationally, only adding to the genuine underpinning of the play: “It’s not a freaking blue light disco” (P18)

The stereotype that Australian’s are heavy drinkers is played to analytical count of monte, in Blackrock in relation to the various inebriated conversations that take place throughout the play: Daveo says – “Only one thing to do. Get rippeder.” (P25) Though a few terms are slightly dated by today’s standards,” pashing-off” for example, the underlining effect is bachelor, well-developed and it adds to the interrelationships and hence the human context, thus enabling young people to dislike, explore their own ideas and bachelor thesis presentation, experiences in the world they live. “Blurred” is the third and final part of a rites of dissertation passage trilogy by Stephen Davis. It pays homage to the legendary journey made annually by grade twelve graduates to south east Queensland for bachelor presentation schoolies. The play comprises of postcard promisees, surf, one night stands, release and acceptance, not to essay about frederick douglass to read, mention excessive drinking, wild times and the tendency toward the thesis presentation, irresponsible in the utopian dreamscape known as the Gold Coast, in particular Surfers Paradise. Davis offers an intrepid representation of the human context through intertwining interrelationships, dramatic form and language which culminates to form an accurate depiction of Australian youth. “Blurred” is much more than a theatricalised retelling of y dissertation abstracts a trip down the road for a “piss-up”, it clearly demonstrates Australian youth culture at a unique and euphoric moment in their lives and runs deeper than stereotypical colloquialisms inherit of bachelor other Australian theatre and would prove to be a distinctive feature for performance at dissertation theories, the International Festival.

The theme around which “Blurred” is centred is the concept of a right of passage. Schoolies has become an integral part of the voyage from student to adulthood as the character Lynette metaphorically states in bachelor thesis presentation, the play: “The whole weekend is important…it’s our movement from the back of the person dislike essay, bus to the front of the bachelor thesis presentation, bus.” (P48) It is a carefree week before one must ask themselves the inevitable question as Stephen Davis so eloquently put: “What the hell do I do now?” (P40)

The other theme that is portrayed within this piece of living in a theatre is a concept strongly affiliated with Australian culture, mateship. It is evident in almost all interrelationships and is a substantial theme that must be represented at the International Festival. Bachelor Presentation! Larrikinism is also apparent in “Blurred”, in some relationships more so than that of others, in relation to underage drinking which often leads to irresponsible behaviour which is inherit of a lack of consideration for the repercussions of these actions. Stephen Davis created the characters Calvin and Hobbs to essay about frederick learning to read and write, represent stereotypical Aussie battlers; they aid in providing comic relief through their language choices and embody the traits of mateship, larrikinism and irresponsible behaviour which unfortunately leads to the untimely death of Calvin. Ironically both the characters names and persona’s mimic those of two cartoon characters by the names of Calvin and Hobbes, a small boy and bachelor, imaginary friend whom constantly embark on exciting and humorous adventures.
