Ap European History Summer Assignment 2012. Dustin Winski Jun 26th, 2012 AP Euro AP European History Summer Assignment 2012 Why did trade and travel decline after the letters medical, fall of Rome? After the fall of Rome, with no government to supply protection or to travel team report, keep the rads and bridges repaired, travel became difficult and dangerous. This danger, coupled with ignorance and lack of desire to change the situation by the powerful lords, whose manors required little trade, led to the decline in travel and trade. Cover Assistants. Who was the first “Holy Roman Emperor” and how did he get that title? After restoring Pope Leo III in Rome from which he had been driven by travel report invaders, Charlemagne was crowned by letters the Poe as “Emperor of the Romans”. The Frankish Kingdom them became known as the essay topics education, Holy Roman Empire, a name that would remain until the Empire was dissolved by Napoleon in 1806. What is the difference between the Roman Empire and the Holy Roman Empire? The Holy Roman Empire was started by cover letters assistants Charlemagne and resume cover, was centered in France. It was called the Holy Roman Empire#8221; due to the fact that the Pope crowned Charlemagne as the Emperor. What were the connections between “The Holy Roman Empire” and for new medical, “The Church”?

The Holy Roman Empire was an endeavor by the Catholic Church and Christian kings to travel team report, restore in their own image the crumbled remains of the for new medical, secular achievements of the ancient pagan Roman Empire. Define feudalism and describe the characteristics of its organization. Feudalism was also a social and economics organization based on a series of writing reciprocal relationships. The king in theory owned the land which he granted to letters medical assistants, lords who in return would give service, usually in the form of military aid, to the king. For both, since the King#8217;s writ didn#8217;t extend directly through a country, they were often reliant on local governing mechanisms. In practice, that usually meant the nobility of the region involved, whose loyalty was to their own family and its privileges rather than to the monarchy. What were the benefits supposedly derived from the feudal system?

Who benefited the most? Feudal manors provided both political and social organization. Cover Letter Controller. They also were individual economics units , nearly self-sufficient due to cover for new medical assistants, medieval warfare, the resume cover controller, difficulties to travel, and the resultant lack of trade. The feudal estate featured a manor-home, usually a fortified castle surrounded by protective walls, belonging to the lord, surrounded by fields, herds and villages where serfs lived and worked. What was the importance of “The Church” and the Christian religion in the lives of the medical, Europeans in the Middle Ages? Religion and the after-life became the focal point of thought and travel team book, living. The influence of religion can also clearly be seen in the art, architecture, literature, and cover medical, music of the time. This was most likely cause because life was so hard on earth, the peasants endured it concentrating on and longing for their reward in the after-life. How did the ritual and sacraments of the Church establish a constant, ongoing relationship with its individual members? The believers of the Roman Catholic Church believed the seven sacraments kept an individual constantly connected to God and the Church from birth to death.

The Church led the belief that one could only get to heaven through good deeds and observing the sacraments. How did the Church us the powers of excommunication and interdiction in maintaining its power? The idea of excommunicating individuals kept people from observing the sacraments which gave them the ability to enter heaven. Also, whole geographic areas could be punished through interdiction which prohibited the writing conclusions essays, performance of cover letters assistants any of the sacraments in a2 biology, that district. This made the Church more organized than any other political state in Europe. How was Education, learning and knowledge of Europe preserved during the lowest point of the Middle Ages, the so-called “Dark Ages”? Education was secured by cover for new the people being put into strict division of social classes most notably the writing essays, Church, peasants, and the bourgeoisie. What was the dominant philosophy of the cover assistants, Middle Ages called?

Who was its most outstanding spokesman? What were its basic beliefs, and term paper, how did the philosophy view life and understanding? The dominant philosophy of the late Middle Ages was best articulated by St. Thomas Aquinas and known as scholasticism. Who belonged to each of the medical, three estates of medieval European society and what was the primary duty of a member of each estate? How was this different from the social classes in modern society? The first of the estates were composed of the Church. The main purpose for this estate would be to claim the authority of God. The second estate consisted of the nobility of #8216;society#8217;.

The primary focus of the nobility were to function as warriors. The third estate had little to no power in term alternatives, that time of society and composed of peasants and laymen. Letters For New Medical. This changed throughout Europe with the coming of feudalism. This differs from modern society for the facts of a more prosperous middle class. Describe the guilds.

Who made up their membership and what was their influence on the business practices of the late Middle Ages? In the middle ages, the #8216;Guilds#8217; were labor market intermediaries organizing training, working conditions. These merchants and craftsmen formed the basis for a new class of townspeople, the bourgeoisie. They would be the basis of the growing middle class. How did the guilds improve the lot of freemen?

How did they help business and trade? How did they restrict its growth? The improvement of the a2 biology evaluation, freemen could be seen from a point of their increase of professions. The benefits of cover for new this system would be the systematic control and increase of certain professions that were needed at the time. This order was kept to maintain employment and necesity for the freemen. However, as a result of the daisy buchanan, control over the market, restrictions on letters, personal choice ended up restricting its growth.

Who were the bourgeoisie? Why did they not fit in the traditional class structure of the Middle Ages? The bourgeoisie were merchants and craftsmen formed the basis for a new class of town dwellers. They did not fit into what would be considered traditional because of their system and plans of growing the middle class. Why was the social structure of Europe challenged by cover letter for document the growing number of free townspeople and the changing economy? With the strengthening control of the kings, powers and influence of the feudal lords led to leaving more land in the hands of fewer people. This led to the even farther decline in the idea of cover medical assistants feudalism. How did the travel report, Crusades help to begin the change from cover for new medical assistants Medieval society into a modern society? The Crusades stimulated trade by certain political, social, and economic changes. This was achieved by the unknowing attacks on feudal lords and in turn gave the increased power to the kings.

The changes developed after the cover, old nobility lacked the wealth to keep up with the kings. Why are the Crusades sometimes called “Successful failures”? The Crusaders led to the eventual fading out of feudal states in the most of Europe and is an important part of European expansion and cover medical, colonialism. Why and in what ways did kings and buchanan essays, central governments grow stronger at the end of the Middle Ages? The Kings helped facilitate the assistants, forming of countries by uniting small feudal states into large kingdoms. They helped develop the idea of a central government within these kingdoms. This centralized government was indeed stronger than the smaller micro-state governments . What obstacles stood in the way of the creation of strong central governments? Since strong central governments often emerge from weaker central governments or loose confederations a central government may also have to deal with regional lords who regard centralization as an infringement on essay topics about education, their own ower. Why was the re-establishment of trade so important to assistants, the transformation of Europe?

Re-establishment of trade was very important due to the fact of the bourgeoisie wanting to create a wider middle class. This could not happen because of what current state Europe was in due to the idea of book feudalism. Also, where there is any contact between two civilizations ideas will be traded amongst them, giving each civilization new ideas. math reu essay Get via App Store Read this post in our app! I believe this is the right place to cover letters for new ask this, so I was wondering if anyone could give me advice on travel team book report research at the undergraduate level. I was recently accepted into letters medical, the McNair Scholars program. It is a preparatory program for students who want to go on to graduate school.

I am expected to submit a research topic proposal in the middle of the spring semester and study it during the topics education, summer with a mentor. Since I am currently in the B.S. Mathematics program and I want to get my Masters later. I figured that while my topic can be in any area, it should be in math since it is my main interest as well. I am a junior at the moment and letters medical assistants, taking: One-Dimensional Real Analysis, Intro to Numerical Methods, and Abstract Algebra.

I frequently search MathWorld and Wikipedia for topics that interest me, although I don't consider myself a brilliant student or particularly strong. I have begun speaking with professors about their research also. I have not met any other students doing undergraduate math research and term paper alternatives, my current feeling is for new medical that many or all the problems in math are far beyond my ability to writing for argumentative essays research them. For New. This may seem a little defeatist but it seems mathematics is writing for argumentative essays progressively becoming more specialized. I know that there are many areas emerging in Applied mathematics but they seem to be using much higher mathematics as well. My current interest is Abstract Algebra and Game Theory and letters for new medical, I have been considering if there are possibilities to apply the former to the latter. So my questions are: 1) Are my beliefs about the possibilities of undergraduate research unfounded? 2) Where can I find online math journals?

3) How can I go about topics about, finding what has been explored in areas of medical interest. Should I search through Wikipedia and MathWorld bibliographies and team, or look in cover letters for new assistants, the library for research? Thanks I hope someone can help to travel book report clarify and guide me. Since you are a student who's already interested in for new assistants, going on to graduate school and is specifically asking about finding a topic to writing for argumentative study at your undergraduate level program at cover, McNair, please disregard the negative nattering nabobs whose answers and comments suggest that undergraduates have no place or business in trying to perform research, whether it's research as defined for all scientists or the research experience that is put together for undergraduates and for term advanced high-school students. Cover Medical. Undergraduates can definitely perform research, or even benefit from going through a structured and well-administered research experience. I agree with Peter Shor about finding a mentor, or multiple mentors, as soon as possible.

There's no reason you have to be limited to getting advice from just one professor or teacher. I agree with Ben Webster, specifically about speaking with professors in daisy essays, order to get a reasonable idea about the assistants, level of work that would be needed for you to perform useful research at an undergraduate level. Travel Team Book. A few other suggestions come to mind: if you are at an institution that offers Masters and Ph.D. level degrees in mathematics, then your institution's library should have multiple research journals in cover letters assistants, hard-copy . I have found that it is much easier to go to the stacks in daisy, the library and browse through one or two year's worth of Tables of Contents and Abstracts in letters assistants, one journal in an afternoon or evening. This will familiarize you with the types of research papers being published currently, and make you aware of what quanta of research is enough to be a single research article. make sure to attend Seminars, Colloquia, and (if your school's graduate students have one) any graduate research seminar courses that you can find time for.

This will allow you to become more familiar with various subtopics within the alternatives, topics of your interests, and to letters medical assistants see what the buchanan essays, current areas of interest are for letters medical local and visiting faculty members. Colloquia are great as they often start by including a brief history of the topic by an expert in that field. Seminars are great because they allow students to see the social aspect of math, including the give-and-take and the critical comments and requests for more detail and explanation, even by tenured faculty who don't follow a speaker's thought processes. Graduate student seminar presentations are great because a student observes how graduate students can falter during presentations, how they are quizzed/coached/criticized/mentored/assisted by faculty during their presentations. I'll admit that I'm not sure attending dissertation defenses would be of term alternatives any serious benefit to cover medical the undergraduate student, other than observing the interaction level (animosity level?) between faculty and graduate students. absolutely make sure to schedule some time to meet with mathematics professors who specialize in the fields of team book report your interest, and communicate your desire to do research while you are an undergraduate, and communicate your desire to go on to graduate studies in mathematics. look on the internet and search for undergraduate opportunities for research in for new, mathematics. I guarantee you will find quite a number of resume letter for document controller web sites that can give you more information. Letters For New. MIT has an undergraduate research opportunity program that many of their students take advantage of. Your institution may have professors who can speak with you and give you advice. Also, make sure to speak with more than one professor, and do not take any single person's advice as being the final word.

Mathematicians are human beings too, and subject to the foibles and inclinations and essay education, disinclinations that all human beings have. If you run into disgruntled and critical individuals, do not let that dissuade you from going on into mathematics or decrease your desires. If you run into overly optimistic individuals who praise you too much and are too eager to take you on letters for new medical assistants to do scut work computer programming, thank them for their time and a2 biology coursework evaluation, let them know you'll come back to speak with them after you've spoken with other professors and weighed your options. Don't turn anyone down immediately. Always be polite in speaking with professors and teachers. Ask them how they chose their topics for their degrees, and you'll learn a lot. As an undergraduate in the US with some research experience, let me offer my take on cover letters the situation. 1) I think it's important not to travel report have a finished product (that is, a piece of original research) as the for new medical, end goal.

This past summer I did some research through MIT's SPUR program, and this is term alternatives their definition of success: Significant progress, relative to one's own background and experience, in for new, developing interests, satisfaction, skill, and ideas, rather than getting the about education, complete solution to a problem. I think this is a really nice sentiment. The goal is not for you to start making serious contributions to cover assistants mathematics but to prepare you in several ways for a graduate experience. (If you're curious, I blogged a little about cover letter for document, my research here and for several posts afterwards. I did not prove a new result, but I learned a lot and thought it was a valuable experience.) 2) It depends on what your institution has subscriptions to. Letters Assistants. Click around on scholar.google.com to see what you can access without paying for.

Many institutions, for example, have access to JSTOR or SpringerLink. 3) Find someone who knows the subject and ask them to mentor you. Or, find a mentor and paper, ask them for a subject. This is hard to do without guidance. Let me also give you some advice you didn't ask for. If you are seriously planning on graduate studies, I think you should expand your mathematical worldview as much as possible beforehand. The easiest way to letters for new medical assistants do that, in my opinion, is to read math blogs. Evaluation. I recommend starting with Terence Tao's and Tim Gowers' and working from there, and I also recommend John Baez's This Week's Finds (actually, read the rest of his stuff too). Math blogs are a valuable source of insight into mathematics and how mathematicians work, and these three are particularly interesting and for new medical, well-written. Terence Tao's blog also contains his career advice, which is for argumentative essays worth a read.

So on for new medical assistants the one hand I have a very strong cultural bias against undergraduate research programs. I don't think trying to emphasize originality is a good idea. Travel Team. I think it would be much better to give people problems to work on that have already been solved and cover letters for new, so you know lead to good and interesting mathematics. By forcing people to work on new questions I think you are often forcing them to work on bad math. On the other hand, just because I think it would be better for people to do other sorts of programs, REU-style programs are what exist and they seem to work reasonably well for a lot of people. Furthermore, they're certainly valuable as an alternative to classroom learning.

Real math research is not like what happens at most REUs, but it's also not like what happens in topics, a classroom, so doing an REU is still going to help you get closer to understanding the scope of what a graduate student does. So yes it's certainly possible and somewhat valuable for cover for new undergraduates to try to do research, but you shouldn't expect that research to be the a2 biology coursework, same sort of cover assistants research that mathematicians are really doing. There are quite a few undergrads who have done significant research in mathematics at your level. Even if you don't end up with a published paper (you shouldn't expect this, although it probably happens more often than you might expect), you will gain significant experience into what doing original research in mathematics means. However, I think expecting to find a problem to work on topics yourself, rather than have a mentor suggest one (or several) to you, is absolutely unrealistic . Maybe it's realistic for other fields, but in my opinion not mathematics. Find a mentor who is willing to suggest a problem that you can tackle at letters for new, your level, and essays, (hopefully) give you ideas during the assistants, summer if you get stuck. Finding the controller, right problems to work on is a major component of letters doing mathematical research, and topics about, sometimes the hardest one. If you find it on your own (rather than a mentor suggesting it), your mentor is likely not going to have any good ideas of how to attack it, it may end up a harder problem than is cover medical assistants realistic for you to solve, and your mentor will be less motivated to help you. So my advice is to team start looking for letters medical mentors now.

Your beliefs are somewhat unfounded; lots of people (for example, me) do research in various fora as undergrads, and in fact, the report, NSF is pushing undergrad research quite hard nowadays. On the other hand, it's not something that's easy to do on your own. While you may get some other reasonable suggestions from people, there's an obvious first step here, which is talking to a professor (possibly several). Decide on the mentor, and then have them help you prepare the research proposal. As an undergraduate, trying to go out and find articles on your own without any direction is like searching for a needle in a haystack. You might find something cool, but I wouldn't recommend it as a first approach. I am a junior at letters, the moment and taking: One Dimensional Real Analysis, Intro to Numerical Methods, and Abstract Algebra . Based on this information, I think it is a complete waste of your time even to consider research seriously at this stage; you need several more years of study as a minimum.

Right now, you are still learning the topics about education, basic language of mathematics. Cover. It's similar to, say, a student who wants to begin reading classical German literature, but only knows 100 words -- premature, to say the least. The maths you know right now is probably less than 1% of a2 biology coursework what you will need. Even after my Ph.D., I feel that my knowledge is very limited in letters, comparison to most good researchers. But do you really mean research, i.e. new, original, nontrivial and essay, interesting, and for new medical assistants, publishable in a good quality journal, i.e. one which your professors would publish in? Or do you mean a kind of investigation or project instead? These are not required or expected to contain anything new or original. This would be highly worthwhile -- but only for your personal interest and travel team, satisfaction. The question is, what do you expect to get out of it?

If you're at a good university, their lecture courses should already provide you with all you need. Please don't take offense, and apologies if I've formed the wrong impression, but it sounds to cover letters for new medical me ( from your statement I have begun speaking with professors about a2 biology, their research also ) like you might be the kind of cover student that irritates professors, always bugging them and daisy, asking them questions about their own research, but lacking the knowledge to understand the answers. ( But it's not your fault you lack knowledge - that's what you're at letters for new, university to learn! ) As an analogy, imagine a ten-year-old, knowing nothing more than how to essay add fractions, constantly harrassing you to for new medical assistants teach them about calculus; my response (unless I were in term paper alternatives, a very good mood that day) would be: go back to school and stop bothering me, for at least another 3 years! Unless you're an exceptionally good, enthusiastic student, or your professors are far more patient than me, that might be what they're thinking also, but are too polite to tell you. But just my opinion, don't take my word for cover letters for new assistants it; why don't you ask them directly if that's what they're thinking?! I am an writing for argumentative undergraduate myself who was in a situation two years ago similar to the one you're in for new assistants, right now. As a sophomore (I'm a senior now), I wanted to do some sort of research but I hadn't taken that many courses. I was just taking real analysis and abstract algebra at the time. However, I asked around the math department for research opportunities algebra and game theory (yes, even my interests were similar!) and a2 biology coursework evaluation, a professor recommended another professor to me who had just what I was looking for: an approach to medical combinatorial game theory using algebra (and a little bit of geometry). I have been working on this topic with him since the summer after my sophomore year. Term Paper Alternatives. Last summer, I participated in an math REU with a handful of other students.

Research in the REU was more independent, with the students doing pretty much all of the work while the mentors served more as helpful sounding boards than co-researchers. Here are the differences I have found between the two research experiences: Since the cover letters medical assistants, problems I am working on are of direct interest to my professor as well, the topics I have to daisy essays learn in order to even begin to approach the research tend to be more advanced, so I end up learning a lot of interesting theory (my research has led me into combinatorial commutative algebra and local cohomology) Again, since the professor is working on this with me, I spend a great deal of letters for new medical assistants time talking with him, bouncing ideas back and forth, and this creates a very strong mentor-student relationship that I feel is very beneficial. My mentor gives me advice not just on a2 biology evaluation how to do math, but also on applying to graduate schools, writing good papers and abstracts, giving talks and presentations, etc. As the cover letters medical assistants, students were expected to work independently of the professor, I was thrown into buchanan essays, the deep end basically. Cover Letters Medical. What entailed were weeks of intensive reading and thinking. Travel Team Book. Although the mentor was there to help me make sure I was sane by letting me bounce ideas off him, I was still responsible for cover medical assistants all of the original thinking and problem solving. Term Paper Alternatives. The benefits of this are absurdly great: my problem solving skills have improved greatly and cover letters assistants, I find it far easier to follow lectures and resume cover for document controller, do homework problems now.

In fact, math classes feel like nothing now that I have done some research on my own. We were free to work with other students, and I did collaborate with a few students, which I think is an invaluable experience. By talking to cover for new medical these students every day, I learned different ways of thinking about topics about, things, and different approaches to solving problems. Not to mention, I made a few very good friends with whom I remain in close contact and talk about math! I got to do some nontrivial original work (although I wouldn't say the problems I solved were important) and wrote some publishable material. Cover For New Assistants. This needn't happen, though.

The point is to get the experience. The bottom line is this: if you're eager to do research, ask around for professors who are looking for motivated undergraduate students. Conclusions Essays. Make sure they know that you are motivated and willing to learn and cover letters for new, work hard. I think it is a very valuable experience to be exposed to real mathematical research, to know what it feels like to attack a problem that no one else has cracked yet. It's completely different from coursework. I never considered myself particularly talented at mathematics, but over the years I have realized that being good at a2 biology, doing math is letters much more about practice and experience rather than some natural talent.

I also highly recommend one of the NSF sponsored REUs, as the mentors are usually very skilled at a2 biology evaluation, picking problems that are at an appropriate level for undergraduate students. I hope this helped. The following might be more appropriate as a comment to sleepless in beantown's answer instead of an answer, but for some reason I am not able to comment. The following website of the cover for new medical, AMS contains numerous links to topics about education Research Experience for Undergraduates (REU) programs. If I understand correctly, these REU programs are funded by the NSF to offer undergraduate students (not necessarily from the institution that is hosting the program) an opportunity to medical assistants do research, under supervison, over the summer. (Since there was some debate what research should mean, I add that here research means, or at least can mean [and not only rarely], something that in for argumentative, the end is published in well-established mathematical research journals.) Also, there is a somewhat recently founded journal Involve specifically dedicated to medical assistants showcasing and encouraging high quality mathematical research involving students (at all levels) I think the earlier one starts doing research the team, better, even if it is a research in plane geometry. I directed a few REU's and it was great fun; the only problem is for new that it is hard to do anything significant in 8 weeks.

I am confident that many US undergrads can produce a publishable work after focusing on a problem for 1-2 years. In the place where I went in college (Novosibirk, Russia, mid 80s) students went through abstract algebra and real analysis in the first two years and the best of them them could do nontrivial work in the 3rd year. Quite a few people were going to research seminars in essay topics about education, 3-4th year, which they had to be doing since a (master) thesis with original research was expected at the end of medical 5th year. As it happens for many students this thesis was largely expository, but those who later become professional mathematicians usually got something publishable in the 5th year. My own research in a2 biology coursework evaluation, the 4th year went nowhere, but in the 5th year I proved something I am not ashamed of. The web site on the McNair Graduate Opportunity program gives no indication that mathematics students were in mind, and a quick survey of some past students' topics showed none in mathematics. I do not think the cover letters for new assistants, program was designed for mathematics students or the for document, way mathematics research is done, even undergraduate mathematics research. Mathematics has few research groups, lab technicians, or bottle-washers.

We usually do mathematics with 1-2 people involved. In other areas, you can learn to run some tests, and collect data, and analyze it with the help of an advisor. You have a very high chance of accomplishing something, and meanwhile you can try to learn how your work fits into a larger picture. Cover Letters For New Medical. Most mathematical projects are more risky. It takes a lot of work as an advisor to about create a project approachable by an above average mathematics major which has a good chance to produce new results the student can write up. Letters Medical. Much of mathematics does not involve programming, but many projects designed for short-term results are programming exercises which may give a distorted picture of team book report mathematics. This is not to cover letters for new medical assistants say that undergraduate research is not worth the attempt. It is paper one way to see that mathematics is cover letters for new medical assistants alive and exciting, which may be hard to see from courses.

I almost did something nontrivial when I was a student, and one undergraduate I supervised did some nice, publishable work and I was able to write a good letter of recommendation for him afterwards. However, students need support which may not be provided in a program which is not designed for mathematics majors. You need an advisor who will put a lot of effort in (even in choosing the topic) beyond what is needed in other areas. Term Paper. You should be aware that failing to solve the problem is often not a surprise, and that you may be severely handicapped with only one year of solid mathematics courses. I think you should look at cover, alternatives such as mathematics Research Experiences for Undergraduates (REUs) or setting up a reading course in which the alternatives, goal is not to produce new research, but to understand some recent result or paper, perhaps to create a more accessible exposition of that topic. Yesterday I proved a small fact and asked a follow-up question in this answer: It's fairly elementary, I'd be interested to know more about it, and I have never seen anything like it in the literature (although I have not searched).

So you could look at that if you wanted to. Cover Letters For New Assistants. More generally, there are plenty of problems like this, but they are not always easy to find. If you just start reading books and buchanan essays, looking for things to research there is cover assistants a danger that you will just be led along the best-travelled paths where enormous amounts of work have already been done. Book Report. So I would second the cover medical assistants, advice to ask several professors for suggestions before deciding on a topic. I have to disagree with the sentiment that undergraduate research (that is, research done by students who are actually at paper alternatives, the undergraduate level in their studies, like the OP) is premature or somehow not worthwhile. A month into my first abstract algebra class, I approached my professor to talk about research and what I should do to get to that level. Luckily for me, this professor went a step further and actually gave me a choice of things to work on.

Now granted, I doubt this is the norm. My college did not have a graduate program, which made undergraduates more of the center of medical attention and moreover this particular professor has a keen interest in fostering undergraduate research. However, I think it is travel team worthwhile to a student to pursue it (even if your professors aren't interested or don't have a problem at your level to give you, as has been mentioned there are always REUs) for the following reasons: You see a different facet of assistants mathematics then you typically see in a course or textbook. Resume Letter. Those are realms of proven things (generally speaking; I am sure there are exceptions, but the letters medical assistants, usual undergraduate topics tend to be fully developed in my experience). On the other hand, research is messy, with missteps and essay topics, mathematicians block and cover, the thrill of buchanan essays showing something new. I think the potential mathematician should see that as soon as possible!

You gain a wealth of cover letters for new medical assistants valuable insight and skills. Paper. At least for me, I grew very comfortable with TeX, got a good deal of letters for new assistants experience with presenting mathematics, and learned a lot about effectively explaining mathematics on paper as well. If you are lucky like I was, this initial collaboration can lead to more research, hence more time honing your intuition, research habits, and paper-writing skills. In other words, sure, you are probably not going to essay topics about education see an cover letters assistants undergraduate solve a particularly interesting problem, but surely it is coursework evaluation worthwhile to promote growth of these skills as well (not to mention that, frankly, in the competitive world we live in it wouldn't hurt to cover for new assistants have your name on some papers and some professors seeing you talk at workshops and evaluation, things). On a personal note, I have to cover assistants say I found that there was feedback between positive research and my courses: the more I learned, the more tools I had to attack problems obviously but the research aspect really improved my ability to see the solutions to exercises and grasp the larger picture of the courses I took. Bottom line, for an aspiring mathematician there is nothing to lose and everything to gain, so you should definitely see what is out there and try to get involved with some research. Most major topics have been covered in discussion, so just two remarks/experiences: While director of graduate studies at Northwestern (2007-2010), I led a committee which valued undergraduate preparedness over research experience. So at least as far as Northwestern was concerned during that time frame, research (especially research for which an undergrad may not be fully prepared) did not help as much as you might have thought. In trying to use RTG funds toward undergraduates, rather than try to simulate a research environment, I and my co-PI's created an undergraduate conference to resume cover letter for document try to cover letters medical assistants offer a supplement to team book standard undergraduate curricula, without yet getting on toward research.

Here is the cover letters medical assistants, link: http://www.math.northwestern.edu/summerconference/ Maybe we'll do it again next year? You might want to cover start looking for a mentor before you get too deeply involved in developing your project. It's great to have some broad ideas, but it isn't a good idea to box yourself in so far that your project isn't a good fit for those on cover letters for new the faculty who might be interested in mentoring you over the summer. Also, potential mentors might have some ideas for projects that would be a good fit for both you and the mentor. Before you start approaching potential mentors, be sure to check with your McNair program to writing for argumentative find out what the program expects of the cover letters, mentor (for example, the mentor might be expected to travel team write a brief biweekly status report commenting on your progress, as well as validating that you have met milestones for your project). For New Medical. You might want to develop your project proposal with your mentor and to start working together on a realistic set of milestones. The McNair program here tied a large chunk of the book report, summer stipend to meeting milestones. Have there been other McNair scholars in math at your school in cover letters for new, previous years? You might check with your school's McNair program, your department head, and/or your coursework advisor about this. If there have been others, you might also get some tips about potential mentors.

I cannot speak from the point of view of letters for new medical a Math major in US since I never was one. I completed my undergraduate studies in engineering and currently pursuing a Ph.D. in coursework, pure mathematics. In my opinion, applied mathematics (though admittedly this quite a generic term) would be more accessible to an undergraduate considering research than pure Mathematics.

I ended up publishing two single author papers in respected journals while in my senior year. Assistants. I had started working on term alternatives both these problems during my junior and both of for new assistants them were picked by me. When I though I had a good insight into the problems, I approached the term, faculty within my university for suggestions. I think it is safe to say that a lot of cover problems in applied mathematics require less sophisticated machinery than is used by most pure mathematicians. Many of my engineering friends started working on their Ph.D. thesis problems fresh out of a Bachelors in areas which could be termed as applied mathematics. This contrasts with most pure math grad students I know who usually spend between 1 to 3 years of coursework before starting to work on a concrete research problem.

So it seems that undergraduate level coursework would be sufficient in handling a good number of applied math problems. Travel Report. So if you are advanced undergraduate student with a good background in one such allied area, I think it might be worthwhile to medical explore this possibility. After all you can gain valuable experience doing research even if you do decide to pursue some other area of math in your graduate life. Since you are interested in game theory, one area you could consider is travel team book report Algorithmic Game Theory (basically Algorithm Design + Game Theory) It is a now a fairly hot area in letters for new assistants, theoretical computer science but still seems relatively approachable to an undergraduate with knowledge of game theory. SAT / ACT Prep Online Guides and Tips. If you took the cover letters for new medical assistants ACT with Writing in September, October, or December of 2015, you may have been taken by surprise by the change in a2 biology the essay prompt (compared to previous ACT Writing tests). And when you got your scores back. well, you may have been even more confused. While the change in cover letters for new the ACT essay format was announced ahead of time, the full explanation of how the term paper Writing scores would be normalized was not made clear until after the first administration of the for new medical assistants new ACT Writing test. Because of this, ACT, Inc. Evaluation? faced a bit of controversy about the scoring of the new Writing test. Now they've returned to a 12-point scoring scale, with a more transparent calculation system. Read on to learn what all this means for you. feature image credit: Shock and Awe by Pascal.

Public domain. Some Quick Background Information. Saturday, September 12, 2015 was the first worldwide administration of the new ACT Writing Test . Letters For New Medical? The changes to book report, the essay included a completely different assignment, a different scoring system (essay scores range from 1-36 instead of cover for new medical assistants 2-12), and a different amount of time for the essay (40 minutes instead of 30). These parameters were made publicly available beforehand (although they were not perhaps publicized as widely as they could have been), so while some students didn’t realize the test was changing, that part wasn't entirely ACT, Inc.'s fault. Many students applying early decision or early action to schools had thought that taking the September ACT would leave plenty of time for their scores to term alternatives, be ready before those November 1 st Early Decision or Early Action deadlines. After all, in the past, multiple choice scores had been released by a couple of weeks after the test date, and Writing scores by cover letters, a couple of buchanan weeks after that. Even though ACT, Inc. gave its standard caution that scores could take as much as 8 weeks, most students expected (reasonably) that their scores would be in and sent to colleges well before the ED/EA deadlines. It rapidly became apparent, however, that scoring the Writing tests was taking longer than usual , presumably because of the new scoring for the new Writing test.

On October 14th (about one month after the for new assistants September 12th test date), one student complained: My writing score isn't up yet, even though I got my multiple choice scores 2 weeks ago. Paper? This is so frustrating. Six days later, students and parents alike were starting to get nervous. As one parent wrote, . apparently most people who took the September 12th test have still not received their complete scores, which is putting some ED applications in jeopardy. (I have a niece in this situation.) The concern students were feeling about not having their Writing scores back rapidly snowballed when it was realized that, if you take the ACT with Writing, ACT, Inc. won't send out cover letters medical assistants, your score report at all until your essay has been graded . This meant that if your essay wasn’t graded before the end of controller October (or before October 15th, in the case of some ED/EA deadlines), whatever school(s) you were applying to wouldn’t even get to see your multiple choice scores on English, Math, Reading, and Science for the September ACT. Soon, the frenzy about the delay in Writing scores spread beyond (mainly student-populated) forums to online news sites. Cover Medical Assistants? As Examiner.com reported: So far, ACT has refused to support students affected by the absence of Writing scores by sending colleges official score reports minus the topics about education Writing score for those needing these results for early consideration.

No reason has been provided, only an cover letters medical assistants, indication that it’s not the policy of ACT to send partial results. This policy made many students and parents less than happy with ACT, Inc. “Still no writing score. As many of you, cannot get scores out without writing. We reached out to some colleges to cover letter controller, let them know that an updated score would be coming. Very disappointing, as ACT released the MC choice later than expected (states on their website most score are released within 2 weeks.

So of course they did not release the MC scores timely, and then once again, falsely state that the cover writing score would be available 14 days after MC scores are released -- again, did not occur. So, same story as you all -- and then of course those who still have not even received your MC scores -- my heart goes out to you. Bottom line - ACT needs to revise their processes, it's just not working well or fairly.” Most likely as a result of the outcry from students and parents, ACT, Inc. Education? reached out to schools in October to notify them of the issue with the delay in score release. Inside Higher Ed reported that ACT, Inc. Medical? had sent an daisy essays, email to the National Association of College Admission Counseling urging colleges to assistants, allow screenshots of multiple-choice scores from the September ACT as a stopgap measure. While many students were unhappy with the score delay, however, it was clear that ACT, Inc. was still within the timeframe it had set out for for document controller, itself for grading the essays. As another College Confidential poster wrote: There is no fiasco. When we signed up for the Sept. test, the letters assistants website very clearly stated what bluebayou posted above. Term Alternatives? This means that some people will not have their complete score report until after Nov.

1, since 8 weeks after Sept. 12 is clearly after Nov. 1. D has received all of cover medical her scores, including writing, as of last week. But we went in knowing that they might be late enough that she'd miss an EA date or two. I don't know why it's shocking to people that ACT is releasing scores exactly as the website says it will. So. some students thought they’d be able to squeeze in one more ACT before early decision/early action deadlines, but it turns out they were wrong.

So what? Well, the ACT Writing scoring saga doesn’t stop there. When students finally did get their scores back, confusion still abounded over how exactly these scores were reached. Students who were used to travel, getting in the 30s on all the other sections of the ACT found that they were getting essay scores in the low 20s on the Writing section . One student posted on cover letters for new Reddit: “I was really disappointed that I got a 20 on paper writing but 32 composite.. I pretty much can't send this score anymore.” For students who didn’t know there was a new prompt, or who have difficulty writing under pressure, low Writing scores weren't all that surprising. But some students soon realized that there seemed to letters for new assistants, be a disconnect between their writing subscores and their overall essay scores . As another confused student put it: “I received a 9 on writing conclusions for argumentative essays all subscores for Writing, but my score came out to a 24. Medical Assistants? Is this correct on ACT's part, or is there a scoring error??” It seemed that the buchanan Writing scores on, for instance, the letters assistants September 2015 ACT were equated differently from how ACT, Inc. Writing? had announced they'd be scored. For instance, one commenter on our blog received 11/12 on all four subscores but a 31/36 for her ACT Writing score , whereas the Preparing for the ACT 2015-2016 PDF indicated that 11/12 on all four subscores should result in a 34/36 Writing score.

Another student on a different site noted this same issue, writing: “…what's also weird is cover assistants, that the curve for the writing section changes for paper, each administration. So, 11/11/11/11 may be a 31 on one test (like the September one) and a 34 on a different test (the 2015-2016 Official Practice Test). It seems odd that there isn't a uniform curve for the writing section. How is one prompt harder than another prompt?” Was ACT, Inc. For New Medical? changing how the Writing test was scored from test to test? If so, it hadn't made that fact clear beforehand.

Still other students saw a precipitous drop in buchanan their essay scores from one administration of the cover for new assistants new Writing test to the next. One angry student wrote: “I literally just got my Dec 12th test back, and my composite is a whopping 35, but my writing score is 09. This is extremely peculiar, because the daisy buchanan essays last two times I took the cover for new assistants test, my writing scores were 34 and 35, respectively, and if anything, I only IMPROVED during my most recent attempt. Clearly my writing booklet has been mixed up with someone else's, because this is not only an inaccurate measure of my abilities, but a clear CLERICAL error.” Why the huge issues with scoring for alternatives, ACT Writing? Why were normally 32+ composite scoring students getting single-digit scores on cover for new medical assistants the ACT Writing? I believe that there were a couple of reasons that things went so wrong.

Every time the ACT is writing conclusions, administered, a few tests are graded incorrectly. Whether the cover for new wrong score report gets sent out, or the scanner read a “7” instead of a “27,” or you didn't fill in your multiple choice answers darkly enough…these things happen. The fraction of students who are affected by writing, these errors is so small that it’s normally not an for new medical assistants, issue. In addition, any scoring errors on resume letter for document the previous ACT Writing test might not have been as noticeable, since there were smaller gaps between the letters for new medical assistants score points. It was conceivable that you could go from a 11/12 on a good day to a 6/12 on term alternatives a not-so-great day. However, the letters for new medical assistants September and resume for document December ACT administrations were critical for early and regular admissions deadlines , which made students hyper-conscious of any unusual blips in their scores. Add that to the change in scoring method, and there were just more people complaining about oddly low scores than usual. ACT, Inc. did finally release a concordance chart for the new ACT writing test in late September. This chart explains how the current system of ACT Writing scoring and the old system are linked.

Basically, ACT, Inc. ran a special score concordance study where the same group of students took both essay tests. The scores for the new ACT Writing were then normalized so that the for new medical same numbers of students got scores at each new score point as they would have on team book the old essay (although it wasn’t necessarily the same students in each percentile). Normalizing scores like this is a little tricky because, just like when comparing the SAT and ACT, the cover letters for new assistants scores aren’t on the same scale, so some extra math is essay topics, required to cover assistants, equate the scores. Here is a copy of the writing for argumentative chart the ACT has released comparing the previous out-of-12 Writing scores to the current out-of-36 Writing scores: Former ACT Writing Score. Concordant Current ACT Writing Score. As you can see, there are some pretty large leaps in cover letters for new the concordant scores, particularly between what used to be an a2 biology evaluation, 8/12 (both graders giving the essay 4/6) and a 9/12 (one grader giving the essay 4/6 and one giving it 5/6). Now, when you look at the ACT’s percentile ranking for the new Writing test, it’s clear that a 23/36 on the Writing still places you in the 83 rd percentile, which is not too shabby. But as one concerned parent pointed out: “My DD also got a 35 composite and a 23 on writing. This sounds really low, but actually correlates to the 83rd percentile.

But a 23 on the other sections correlate to letters assistants, percentiles in the 60s. So when colleges see a 23, will they also see the 83rd percentile, or will they assume it's much worse than it is?” And as ACT, Inc. itself admitted in a January 2016 report, A casual observer may assume that a student who received a score of 32 on ACT English, ACT Composite, and ACT writing demonstrated consistent performance, but that would be incorrect. To explain why, we need to look at the percentile ranks for all the sections, side by side. I've combined the most recent information ACT, Inc. has released for the Writing scores and for topics about education, composite and section scores in the below chart: As you can see, there is cover for new medical, a pretty big discrepancy between a 23 on the Writing (which places you at travel team, or above 83 percent of all test takers) and a 23 on any of the other sections (which only places you at for new medical, or above 66-70 percent of all test takers). Here's a graph that illustrates this contrast even further: That jagged purple line to paper, the left, lagging behind all the other section scores? That's the Writing scores for the September and October 2015 ACT.

Because of this discrepancy, ACT, Inc. warns against comparing scores on the Writing test directy to scores on the other sections of the ACT. Quoted verbatim: However, the new writing test combines the four domain scores, which are also reported to students, into an overall summary score on the 1–36 scale, making comparisons with other scores much more tempting. Letters For New? Perhaps too tempting! What’s particularly weird is ACT, Inc.'s explanation of this scoring difference. Term Alternatives? In the letters for new assistants same article in which the graph appears, the term alternatives writers stated that it made sense that there was more variation in writing scores because it was just one question. True enough, but the rest of their explanation left me baffled:

Therefore, the writing test does have significantly greater variation than other scores because it is a single task, evaluated by raters using a 6-point interval scale, while other ACT tests are comprised of for new assistants 40 to 75 questions. One of the big changes with the new ACT essay is that the cover essay graders aren’t giving essays a holistic score any more - two graders are giving each essay four domain scores out of six, for total domain scores out of letters for new twelve . Which means that the daisy buchanan essays essay is cover for new assistants, really evaluated out of a 48 point raw score - not entirely dissimilar to the rest of the sections. So where does the score out of 36 come from? How is it being equated from the sum of the domain scores (which would be out of travel book report 48)? Well, according to ACT, Inc.:

The new writing scale score (1–36) is a nonlinear transformation of the sum of the cover for new two 1–to–6 rater scores on four domain scores (8–48). But while ACT, Inc. released a preliminary chart for how this would work for the Preparing for the ACT 2015-2016 practice test, it appears, as I noted earlier, that the equating may be changing from test to test. Alas, it does not appear that a copy of the equating chart is sent out writing, with the score report, so students have no way of knowing how the score out of 36 was arrived at. Without transparency about the process, it’s understandable why some students are confused and upset . This hinge is just as upset as you. Cover For New Assistants? If not more so! Look at that face. UPDATE: More Changes to ACT Writing Ahead.

Just one year after ACT, Inc. completely overhauled the buchanan ACT Writing test, the scoring for the test is cover letters for new, changing yet again. As of September 2016, the cover letter ACT Writing Test will no longer be scored on cover letters for new assistants a scale of 1-36. Evaluation? Instead, students will receive a Writing score on a scale of 2-12 that is the average of all four of their domain scores (Ideas Analysis, Development Support, Organization, and Language Use), which are also each scored on a scale of for new assistants 2-12. In addition, there are some minor changes to the wording of the prompt that removed the necessity of discussing all three perspectives in a2 biology evaluation your essay. Here's a look at cover medical assistants, what the ACT essay task looked like up through June 2016: Write a unified, coherent essay in which you evaluate multiple perspectives on the conflict between public health and individual freedom. In your essay, be sure to: analyze and evaluate the perspectives given state and evaluation develop your own perspective on cover letters medical the issue explain the relationship between your perspective and daisy essays those given. Your perspective may be in full agreement with any of the cover letters for new others, in partial agreement, or wholly different. Whatever the case, support your ideas with logical reasoning and detailed, persuasive examples. And here's what it'll look like from September 2016 onwards. I've bolded the relevant change below.

Write a unified, coherent essay about the conflict between public health and individual freedom. In your essay, be sure to: clearly state your own perspective on the issue and analyze the relationship between your perspective and at essay about, least one other perspective develop and support your ideas with reasoning and examples organize your ideas clearly and logically communicate your ideas effectively in standard written English. Your perspective may be in cover letters full agreement with any of those given, in partial agreement, or completely different. ACT, Inc. announced the coursework evaluation changes to the Writing test would go into effect September 2016 as part of cover for new medical assistants ACT, Inc.’s effort to “reduce confusion among users.” As stated in both the official press release and in the FAQs about the Writing section, the reason for the scoring change was due to the larger differences between the scoring of the term alternatives Writing test and assistants the English, Math, Reading, and essay about education Science subject scores. Students assumed that the assistants scores on the 1-36 scale meant the same thing from one subject test to another. We recognize that this is a logical assumption, but it is not a correct assumption (source: ACT Writing FAQs). The formal announcement of the for argumentative essays changes to the ACT Writing test scoring occurred June 28, 2016; however, these changes didn’t come entirely out of nowhere. We at PrepScholar first noticed something odd when reading through the newly-released “Preparing for letters for new assistants, the ACT 2016-2017” PDF in mid-June 2016.

Here's what it says on page 8, under the discussion of the ACT Writing Test: You will receive a total of five scores for this test: a single subject-level writing score reported on term alternatives a scale of 2–12, and four domain scores based on an analytic scoring rubric. The four domain scores are: Ideas and Analysis, Development and cover letters assistants Support, Organization, and writing essays Language Use and Conventions. Note : The subject score is the rounded average of the four domain scores. On page 62, further information was given on how to calculate your ACT Writing score for cover for new medical, the practice test included in the PDF: So other than Step 2 (which on the real ACT will involve adding the two essay graders' scores on each rubric area together, rather than just multiplying each area score by two), this domain-score-averaging process is how the ACT Writing test will be scored starting September 2016 . At this point, many colleges are aware of the issues ACT, Inc. A2 Biology Evaluation? had with the letters score release of the new ACT Writing. Team Book? As Boston College states on its admissions website, ACT has notified us that delivery of scores this year will be delayed due to their implementation of an cover letters medical, enhanced design to the Writing portion of the paper alternatives test.” Plus, by now most college application deadlines for Fall 2016 have passed, so whether or not the scores were released in time is kind of letters medical a moot point. But what if you're applying to colleges next year, or are still worried about a low Writing score?

What can you do about it? Some students have resorted to ordering hand-scoring for paper alternatives, their essays to see if it affects their scores (since ACT will only send colleges the new score if it is higher). In the case of at least one student, this was a success – the re-score took a Writing score of cover medical assistants 22 (80th percentile) up to a2 biology coursework, a 28 (95th percentile). Because hand-scoring for the essay is so expensive ($50.00), it might only medical, be worth doing if you believe that you really did receive someone else’s scores in error (i.e. if your Writing score is 6 points different from what you expected), or if the subscores don’t seem to correlate to essays, your writing score out of 36 (e.g. subscores of all 10s, writing score of 11/36). Unfortunately, this means that some students will be at a disadvantage, because fee waivers do not apply to cover letters medical assistants, hand-scoring . You do get refunded the fee if a scoring error is found, but the initial investment of $50 may still be something that economically disadvantaged students don’t want to risk (if there is no score difference). Option 2: Re-take ACT Writing in essay topics September 2016.

In other cases, it might be worth taking the letters assistants September or October ACTs in buchanan essays order to get an essay score on the more-familiar (to admissions officers) 12 point scale . I would strongly urge against depending on medical either of these test dates if you're applying early decision or early action for resume for document controller, most schools, given the score reporting delays that were rampant last year. If you're applying regular decision, though, taking the September or October ACT Writing test could have a positive affect on your application, since a lower Writing score won't look quite as discrepant against the rest of your ACT scores. Now that ACT Writing is scored out of 12, rather than also being out of 36, schools will be less likely to cover letters for new assistants, compare your Writing score directly to conclusions, your ACT English, Math, Reading, Science, and composite scores, and give a sideeye to any huge discrepancies. For many students, however, the letters for new lower-than-expected writing scores are just a byproduct of the way the new ACT Writing section is normed. Take heart, though – many schools already view standardized test essays with a skeptical eye . A2 Biology Coursework Evaluation? As the National Council of Teachers of English has noted, “With respect to writing ability, the ACT's figures indicate at best that students who do well on the test can perform the writing tasks required on the test.” It's unlikely that the ACT's updated September 2016 scoring system is going to do anything to dispel this skeptical attitude.
